March Treat: Green Apple with Reishi Mushroom, Thyme & Kelp

...It's March...time for a new treat of the month. This one's a personal favorite of mine and Penny's. It's a popular flavor for us and full of healthy goodness. [BTW: that's our girl on the cover]

So let's break it down...
Green Apples: we use organic dehydrated apples and if anyone needs reminding, apples are the original superfood.
Here's a few reasons why:
Apples have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, and contain small amounts of potassium, which may promote heart health, help maintain healthy blood pressure and a healthy weight.

Quercetin: May be a major reason why the old saying about eating "an apple a day" has been associated with good health. Quercetin, primarily found in apples, onions, and black tea, belongs to a group of plant pigment flavonoids that serve as a building block for other members of the flavonoid family. It combats the destructive "free radical" molecules that play a part in many diseases.

Specifically, quercetin may help to:
• Reduce cancer risk
• Prevent heart attacks
• Ward off eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration
• Control asthma
• Maintain health when suffering from Crohn's disease
• Prevent recurrent gout attacks
• Speed up healing of recurrent heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD)

Bone Protection
French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.

Alzheimer's Prevention
A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Lower Cholesterol
The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Hailed in ancient Eastern medicine as the "mushroom of immortality" and the "medicine of kings," reishi offers some pretty astounding health benefits.

Anti-allergic activity
Bronchitis-preventative effect, inducing regeneration of bronchial epithelium
Anti-inflammatory
Antibacterial, against Staphylococci, Streptococci, and Bacillus pneumoniae (perhaps due to increased immune system activity)
Antioxidant, by eliminating hydroxyl free radicals
Antitumor activity
Antiviral effect, by inducing interferon production
Lowers blood pressure
Enhances bone marrow nucleated cell proliferation
Cardiotonic action, lowering serum cholesterol levels with no effect on triglycerides, enhancing myocardial metabolism of hypoxic animals, and improving coronary artery hemodynamics
Central depressant and peripheral anticholinergic actions on the autonomic nervous sytem reduce the effects of caffeine and relax muscles
Enhanced natural killer cell (NK) activity in vitro in mice
Expectorant and antitussive properties demonstrated in mice studies

Thyme is more than just an aromatic herb with culinary applications.

Historically Thyme has been used for various purposes throughout the centuries. In medieval times, thyme was regarded as a plant that imparted courage and vigor. The ancient Romans considered it a remedy for melancholy. Ancient Egyptians used it in embalming.

Therapeutically thyme contains an essential oil that is rich in thymol, a powerful antiseptic, antibacterial, and a strong antioxidant. The oil of thyme is used in mouthwashes to treat inflammations of the mouth, and throat infections. It is a common component of cough drops.

Blueberry Power snaps are one of our most popular biscuits. They're quite delicious, I admit ray and I confess Ray and I snack on them quite often.
Of course, we make most of them available for the dogs. Freshly baked, a bit exotic and aromatic with organic ground nutmeg and cardamom.

Baked with a touch of raw wildflower honey. The organic whole dried blueberries are simply fantastic and sooo good for dogs. Chock full of health-maintaining and disease-preventing anti-oxidants, blueberries provide numerous health benefits.

Nutrients and phytochemicals

Blueberries [especially wild varieties] contain anthocyanins, other antioxidant pigments and various phytochemicals possibly having a role in reducing risks of some diseases, cancer among them.

Potential anti-disease effect

Researchers have shown that blueberry anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, resveratrol,flavonols, and tannins inhibit mechanisms of cancer cell development and inflammation in vitro. Similar to red grape, some blueberry species contain in their skins significant levels of resveratrol, a phytochemical.

Although most studies below were conducted using the highbush cultivar of blueberries (V. corymbosum), content of polyphenol antioxidants and anthocyanins in lowbush (wild) blueberries (V. angustifolium) exceeds values found in highbush species.

At a 2007 symposium on berry health benefits were reports showing consumption of blueberries (and similar berry fruits including cranberries) may alleviate the cognitive decline occurring in Alzheimer's disease and other conditions of aging.

A chemical isolated from blueberry leaves can block replication of the hepatitis C virus and might help to delay disease spread in infected individuals.

Feeding blueberries to animals lowers brain damage in experimental stroke. Research at Rutgers has also shown that blueberries may help prevent urinary tract infections.

Other animal studies found that blueberry consumption lowered cholesterol and total bloodlipid levels, possibly affecting symptoms of heart disease. Additional research showed that blueberry consumption in rats altered glycosaminoglycans which are vascular cell components affecting control of blood pressure.

A study soon to be published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that supplementation with wild blueberry juice enhanced memory and learning in older adults, while reducing blood sugar and symptoms of depression.

World's Ugliest Dog?

There's really there's no such thing as an Ugly Dog, but you gotta name the contest something, so let's just agree that it's yet another way to celebrate the canine-human relationship and call it a day.

This year's champ! 4 year old Chihuahua "Princess Abby"

The chihuahua suffers from severe back and leg problems and has a closed up eye, most likely a result of inbreeding, CBS News reported.

"She's a poster child to spay and neuter your pets," celebrity vet Karen "Doc" Halligan said.

We were lucky enough to be a small part of this fun annual event held annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fair [we did a little demo in the groovy stage kitchen]. We demonstrated healthy snax by decorating a cake using our Peanut-Double Carob Chip Cake Mix. There ain't nothin' wrong with cake! Ours is super healthy & delicious using only organic people quality ingredients. We alike to bam it up by adding something seasonal like fresh grated zucchini, carrots, apples, pumpkin, banana, etc. Sweetened with raw honey...yum.
Dogs love it and so did our bi-ped audience!

Our friends from Sonoma Humane and Rohnert Park Animal Shelter were on hand with adoptable critters. I do hope they were able to find some loving forever-people for the most adorable dogs they had in tow. I heard that adopting out cats were the big issue these days; just too many of them!

Thanks to Ellen at Paws For Love and to Foppiano Vineyards for putting on a lovely event. It was a scorcher of a day, but the dogs were troopers and had a blast.

Everyone relaxed with fine wine and grilled sausages while the dogs created their unique works of art.

We set up our little booth at the end of a row among the vines.

We visited with friends like Laura Leah Johnson from Brinkley Books

The dogs munched on biscuits and cake [our Double Carob Chip-Peanut Cake Mix with applesauce & zucchini, garnished with coconut & carob chips]

the tasting room was air-conditioned, which was really nice

and all the dogs were happy.

So I was leafing through my latest Organic Products Retailer magazine [which I personally love] and saw they featured our recently reformulated Double Pumpkin Happiness and Sweet Potato-Ginger Snaps biscuits in the new product listing! Cool!
This past Fall we improved these two recipes by adding bilberry and ginkgo which have numerous health benefits and anti-oxidants but are also well known for eye health and vision support.
Combined with the beta-carotene rich pumpkin and sweet potatoes, these are really great treats for senior dogs. Actually, dogs of any age will benefit and love these snax.
As our dog ages [she's now 6] and as we also age, good eye health and eyesight in general is becoming more important to us.

In early 2007, Bless the Bullys introduced the idea of a national "pit bull awareness day," and it took off like wildfire. Bay To Barkers Party

Sunday morning at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society Bay To barkers . Big fun for dogs and their people. The day started with a mass dog walk, a parade around the event and out around the bay. We returned to play in a dozen games to test our dog skills, agility and obedience stuff, with a ribbon prize for 7 of 11 tasks.

Penny shared her dog cake and tasty treats with some new friends and old pals.

All in all a great day , it seemed to end too soon.

Shovel Ready Project

A while back we set out to clean up and put in a little veggy patch. With Penny's help, we turned the soil quite nicely. Penny is flat-out obsessed with the shovel. Ever since she was a wee pup she goes hog wild at the mere touch of the spade. Needless to say, we won't ever need a motorized roto-tiller so long as Penny's around. It always starts out innocently enough, then all hell breaks loose with dirt flying everywhere and a black dog face and tongue. She's always very pleased with her efforts [and so are we].

Menu Foods earlier revealed it was the target of a federal probe

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the agency is investigating NUTRO pet food, following a series of unexplained illnesses and deaths. Consumers have been complaining for more than two years that their pets have become ill after eating NUTRO products; many have recovered when they were switched to other foods. The company has steadfastly denied that its food is to blame.

Until now, the FDA has been mum about whether it was actively investigating the company. Today, the FDA’s Division of Freedom of Information confirmed the agency has an ongoing investigation into NUTRO — and said that investigation could be criminal or civil in nature. The office did not elaborate on the nature or focus of that investigation.

The investigation came to light when the FDA denied a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by ConsumerAffairs.com seeking a list of complaints and lab results the agency has collected regarding NUTRO pet food. The agency denied the request and said that releasing the information could hamper “prospective or ongoing” action by law enforcement.

“The document(s) constitute record(s) compiled for law enforcement purposes, the disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings,” wrote the FDA’s George A. Strait, Jr., assistant commissioner for public affairs.

Another pet food company, Menu Foods, said in a recent financial filing that the FDA had commenced a criminal investigation to determine whether Menu violated the Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act. The company noted that “additional actions or investigations may arise in the future.” It did not mention any other pet food companies. Menu last year settled a $24 million lawsuit that grew from the largest pet food recall in U.S. history.

NUTRO, which has extensive international operations, was acquired in 2007 by Mars, Inc., the privately-held Virginia-based food products company. Mars was fined a record €4.5 million (about US$5.8 million) last year by the German Federal Cartel Office (FCO) for not observing the required waiting period before closing the transaction. Mars had been by far the leading provider of cat and dog food in Germany prior to the merger.

Under pressure from the German regulators, Mars divested NUTRO's Austrian and German businesses.

A Taste of Spring

Bake this cake for your neighborhood dogs and celebrate the coming of spring and Earth Day:

Ma Snax Superior Treats Carrot Calendula Earth Day Cake for Dogs

Makes one 8” cake or 6 or more cupcakes

1 cup organic whole wheat flour

1 cup organic unbleached wheat flour

3 medium carrots, grated

2 cage free organic eggs

3 ounce canola oil

3 ounce raw honey

2 ounce unsulphered molasses

2 tablespoons crushed dried calendula flowers

1 tablespoon carob powder

1 tablespoon organic flax seeds

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon organic ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon organic ground ginger

Combine dry ingredients, set aside.

Mix eggs, carrots, honey, molasses, canola oil in bowl of electric mixer.Add combined dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not over-mix.

Place batter in prepared cake pan or paper lined cupcake pan.

Bake at 325º for 18 to 25 minutes or until set. Cool.

Decorating suggestions: ice with organic peanut butter mixed with honey or organic cream cheese/yogurt mixed with honey.

Note: cake freezes well.

Serve to lucky dogs!

For those of you who suffer from seasonal or chronic allergies I truly feel for ya.

BUT, our dear Penny is suffering more right now than ever with allergic symptoms/reactions. Her poor belly and actually her whole body is just going crazy! We've tried everything.

Poor dear, she is so obviously in pain. We can only hope that our attempts at controlling or alleviating her discomfort will work and allow her to relax and calm her.

She's doing her best. She's amazing.

First of all, happy 2nd anniversary to our baby. Penny had TPLO surgery two years ago last week.

We cannot praise Dr. Robello and his staff at Pet Care enough. Brilliant surgeon, awesome facility. If your dog needs this surgery done and in you're in the SF bay area, make the trip to Santa Rosa, it is worth it.

Lucky in paradise

We played a little hooky and took an afternoon hike at our favorite nearby spot. We're living a charmed life here in beautiful Sonoma.

Here's Ray & Penny [and me] heading out on the lakeside trail at the Eldridge State Hospital and Glen Ellen Regional Park. It's really close to home, we go there alot.

It's gorgeous 4 seasons.

Penny found some stinky dead stuff to roll in [she always does, that's her thing] I took tons of amazing shots of wildflowers. There's always a symbol of past visitors on the backside of a certain hill and today we found a peace sign shaped with rocks. Really nice. I've seen some freaky stuff there post-Halloween, but that's another season.

All in all, a great day. The horses were happy, we didn't spy the big pink pig at the farm, but we're hopeful for next time. happy spring.

Spring has come in a big way. It's really beautiful sunny and warm here in Sonoma. Great day for a long hike at our nearby regional park in Glen Ellen. The assortment of blooming wildflowers is amazing. There's a great variety of wildlife too. We've seen coyotes, bobcats, otters, deer, snakes and birds like crazy.

We're loving our new packaging. It's a rice paper pouch [with a sweet little window] and we know our customers will love'em too. They have a wonderfully elegant and supple handfeel to them and our colorful labels really stand out. We're always searching for new and different eco-friendly packaging options. Some are quite cost-prohibitive not to mention impractical when they're corn-based. So, let's chop down rainforests to grow more corn? No.

These are of course recyclable, but we wish they were compostable as well. They are however, poly lined for stability and to make them food grade. Here's some pix.

Well, we're finally feeling better. It seems like this bad bug took along time to run its course.

We love our new treat; it's Green Apple & Oats with Reishi Mushrooms and Thyme. Now that my sense of smell has returned, I'm loving this cookie! [Penny loves it too]. She has mastered her new indoor rainy-day trick of "catch the cookie" in mid air with this treat.

We're using reishi mushroom powder, organic dried thyme and granulated kelp in the recipe. Basically we infused some immune boosting goodness into our already popular green apple & oats recipe. Our furry testers wholeheartedly approved.

For those of us with high-maintenance sensitive dogs with allergies and the like who are at multiple vets often, this is very good news.

Times are tuff enough without putting our pet care costs in jeopardy.

Shame and sin in Wilkesboro

Sadly, 145 pit bulls were destroyed in Wilkesboro, NC yesterday. 127 of the dogs were seized from a dogfighting operation bust. The rest were born after the raid. All were euthanized without evaluation. Simply horrible and unnecessary. At the very least we certainly wish those involved will be prosecuted fully.

We heard that the NFL 49er org was looking at Michael Vick as a possible hire for q-back. Disgusting, and hopefully a false rumor.

A break in the rain

We've got sunny skies today, the cure for cabin fever. Penny played with her bud Shadow at Wild Thyme this morning. We bake there; it's a fantastic venue for events too. We're hopefully going to help host dog parties [birthdays/weddings] and other types of meet-ups. We think it has tons of potential for furry enjoyment.
